Rio Tinto to develop the Kangwinan bauxite project with US$1.9 billion investment

Rio Tinto Ltd. has announced a significant investment of US$1.9 billion to develop the Kangwinan bauxite project in Queensland, Australia. This venture is set to not only extend the life of Rio Tinto’s Weipa Operations but also increase its annual production capacity. Here’s an overview of what this ambitious project entails and its implications for Rio Tinto and the region.

The Kangwinan project aims to add 20 million tonnes of annual bauxite capacity, with initial production targeted for 2029 and reaching full output by 2032. This expansion will effectively replace production from the ageing Andoom mine and compensate for the planned cessation of operations at Rio Tinto’s Gove project in the Northern Territory by 2029.

With the development of Kangwinan, the annual production capacity of Rio Tinto’s Weipa Operations is expected to rise to approximately 44 million tonnes, up from the current 38 million tonnes. This increase not only strengthens Rio Tinto’s position in the bauxite market but also supports the longevity of the Weipa Operations well into the future.

The investment is projected to deliver an impressive internal rate of return of about 22%, based on third-party market forecasts. The new production center will be situated about 15 kilometers southeast of Rio Tinto’s Amrun mine on Western Cape York Peninsula. A 15-kilometer conveyor will transport the ore to expanded stockyard facilities and the existing Amrun wharf, which will be expanded to accommodate larger capesize vessels. This infrastructure development is expected to enhance supply-chain efficiency and reduce freight costs.

Construction for Kangwinan is expected to ramp up in 2027, supporting over 1,300 construction jobs. Furthermore, the project will help sustain Rio Tinto’s residential workforce of approximately 1,500 people in the Western Cape region, underscoring the company’s commitment to regional development and employment.

According to Jérôme Pécresse, chief executive of Rio Tinto Aluminium & Lithium, the project signifies a substantial vote of confidence in Weipa and the group’s integrated aluminium business. Kangwinan will also complement Rio Tinto’s proposed acquisition of the nearby Aurukun Bauxite Project from Glencore and Mitsubishi. If successful, the Aurukun project would further integrate with the Amrun and Kangwinan operations, utilizing existing and planned infrastructure across Western Cape York.

The Kangwinan investment is part of Rio Tinto’s existing medium-term capital guidance, which includes US$150 million of early works approved in 2025. This strategic expansion, combined with the company’s robust performance from other operations, such as the Oyu Tolgoi copper operation and Pilbara iron ore business, positions Rio Tinto for sustained growth and influence in the global aluminium market.

In conclusion, the Kangwinan bauxite project represents a pivotal development for Rio Tinto, promising to bolster its production capabilities and economic contribution to the region. The project’s successful execution will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Rio Tinto’s operations and the broader aluminium industry.
