The introduction of new technologies in the mining sector has greatly improved efficiency on how operations run their production processes. Advancements in Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality applications have empowered teams on sites with valuable insights, which enable them to carry out work in a reliable and safe manner.
Through a data driven simulative approach, Kumba Iron Ore received global industry recognition at the 16th annual Global Business Improvement Awards, which acknowledges achievements by mining companies who use simulation as a key driver in mining operations.
The Immersive Technologies sponsored award selects winners from their customer base which spans across 54 countries and acknowledges improvements in workforce safety, productivity and machine reliability.
Achieved under Kumba’s Operate for Reliability programme (O4R), which includes multidisciplinary mining teams such as Load & Haul, Drilling & Blasting, and Road Maintenance & Construction, Kumba won theReliability Award for improvements in operator behaviour and equipment downtime.
Under the guidance and training from the Immersive Technologies team at Sishen Mine through their PRO5 simulator platform, the following results were recorded:
Haul Truck
- 96% decrease in service brake application at high speed
- 22% reduction in truck overloads
- 60% reduction in frame torques
Rope Shovel
- 94% reduction in swing impacts
- 97% reduction in hoist brake not set while hanging
- 72% reduction in hoist stall
- 98% reduction in boom jacks
