Advancing Africa’s mineral processing and sustainability agenda
Tabono acquires 33% stake in Minprotech to advance innovation in mineral processing across Africa

Tabono, a growth partner focused on driving economic development across Africa, is pleased to announce its acquisition of a 33% stake in Minprotech, a company specialising in advanced mining technology solutions, particularly in mineral processing and chrome beneficiation. Minprotech is also 51% black owned, underscoring its commitment to promote economic transformation and empowerment in the South African mining industry.
By maximising recovery of metallurgical grade concentrate from tailings, Minprotech transforms waste streams into valuable resources. This process maximises resource recovery and significantly reduces the environmental impact of mining, offering a sustainable approach that is essential as African mining seeks to remain competitive on the global stage.
This acquisition demonstrates a commitment to driving innovation, sustainability, and operational efficiency beyond the borders of South Africa and into Africa. Tabono CEO Reon Barnard explained: “This deal bucks the broader trend in the African mining sector, where many companies have been slow to adopt new technologies and sustainable practices due to the high upfront costs and uncertain returns”.
Minprotech, known for its solutions in mineral processing technology, will benefit from Tabono’s resources and expertise in driving growth and value creation. The partnership aims to accelerate the development of new mining solutions that prioritise sustainability, efficiency, and safety.
“We are excited about this strategic partnership with Minprotech. Our shared values of innovation and sustainability are key drivers for this acquisition, and we are confident that together, we will deliver groundbreaking solutions to the African mining industry,” said Barnard.
The acquisition is part of Tabono’s broader strategy to expand its influence in industries critical to Africa’s growth, leveraging its global network and deep industry expertise to drive sustainable growth.
Minprotech’s commitment to technological advancement and operational excellence has made it a leading player in the industry, and this partnership will unlock new possibilities for both companies. “We are thrilled to welcome Tabono as a key partner. Their expertise in scaling businesses across Africa aligns perfectly with our vision of advancing mining technology and enhancing the industry’s sustainability footprint,” said Minprotech’s Managing Director, Rudo Engelbrecht.
“This partnership allows us to combine our strengths and make a substantial impact on the mining sector,” concludes Werner Otto, Technical Director at Minprotech.
