On 22nd September 2025, a crucial conversation about the future of African mining will take place in New York. The Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG) is bringing together African Heads of State, ministerial representatives, and global private sector leaders for its 2nd High-Level Roundtable on Critical Minerals Development in Africa. The Roundtable, held as a side event to the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), aims to go beyond dialogue to forge concrete, high-impact partnerships that will redefine Africa’s role in the energy transition.
The roundtable, themed “Forging a Common African Voice, Advancing Global Partnerships,” is a follow-up to the successful 2024 inaugural gathering where African leaders, including Nigeria’s Vice President, H.E. Kashim Shettima, underscored the continent’s potential for self-sufficiency through its abundant mineral resources. Ministers from Malawi, Sierra Leone, UAE, Turkey, Italy, and Liberia also joined that inaugural discussion.
“Africa’s critical minerals are not just a resource; they are the foundation of global sustainable development and a catalyst for our continent’s industrialisation,” stated AMSG Secretary-General H.E. Moses Micheal Engadu. The upcoming event is designed to deepen these commitments, ensuring that Africa’s mineral wealth directly benefits its people through transparent and responsible global partnerships.
A Platform for results
The event is convened by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Event Chair, alongside AMSG leadership, including Chairman Dr. Oladele Henry Alake, Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development of Nigeria and Secretary-General H.E. Moses Micheal Engadu. The audience will include ministerial representatives from AMSG member states, multilateral institutions, and executives from global mining, tech, traceability, and logistics firms.
Expected outcomes
The roundtable will feature three strategic rounds. The discussions will focus on key areas to advance Africa’s position in the global mineral landscape:
- Round 1: Forging a Common African Voice. Leaders will align policies on value addition, minerals security, and strategic autonomy to strengthen the continent’s negotiating power.
- Round 2: Mobilizing Capital and Building Capability. This session will explore innovative financing models, including sovereign, blended, and tokenized finance, such as the Africa Mineral Token.
- Round 3: Building Trust Through Technology and Transparency. Participants will discuss innovations like Traceability Platforms to promote ethical trade and build trust with global buyers and financiers.
The AMSG Roundtable is strategically supported by Core International. “The AMSG roundtable is a unique opportunity for private sector leaders to do more than just talk about Africa’s mineral potential, it’s a chance to build tangible, high-impact partnerships,” said Suleiman Zakari, Managing Partner of Core International. The event’s previous editions have “demonstrated that this platform delivers real results”.
This vision is shared by the Roundtable Partners, who believe that for Africa to prosper, it needs true and up-to-date geological data to drive responsible development.
