B2Gold Otjikoto Mine recently hosted members of the Land Rehabilitation Society of Southern Africa (LaRSSA) as part of a regional technical tour, affirming the company’s commitment to sustainable land use and environmental restoration.
The visit provided LaRSSA delegates with an opportunity to observe the mine’s operations and initiatives firsthand, in line with their mission to promote responsible environmental practices within the Southern African region.
The visit marked a significant milestone in their ongoing commitment to responsible mining and environmental stewardship.
As part of the tour, members visited B2Gold’s active land rehabilitation sites and observed the various stages of ecological recovery, from early-stage revegetation to flourishing areas of restored native vegetation.
These efforts reflect the mine’s science-based approach to land rehabilitation and its long-term dedication to restoring biodiversity and setting a high standard for post-mining landscapes in Southern Africa.
Beyond environmental efforts, the delegation also gained insight into the mine’s integrated sustainability model, visiting the Ombili Clinic and Primary School, both established in partnership with the Namibian government.
These projects underscore B2Gold’s investment in social development as well as its vision to ‘mine with purpose, ensuring that the positive impact of its operations supports health, education and livelihoods in local communities.’
Nansuunga Kambinda, a LaRSSA member and local representative of SLR Environmental Consulting (Africa and Middle East), said it was great to experience firsthand the work B2Gold is doing in progressive rehabilitation, nature conservation, energy efficiency, corporate social responsibility, and agriculture.
“This is a clear example of how mining can coexist with other activities in an environmentally conscious and sustainable way. The B2Gold team works in a space that encourages innovation, learning from challenges, and fine-tuning outcomes for effective implementation at mine closure. The investments being made are now already yielding results and deserve to be emulated,” Kambinda added.
B2Gold extended its gratitude to the LaRSSA delegation and council members for their visit, and emphasised the significance of collaboration to not only strengthen the network of land rehabilitation professionals but also reinforce a shared vision for a sustainable, inclusive future for mining in Southern Africa.
