Steenkampskraal Monazite Mine (SMM) has appointed Sechaba Letaba as General Manager: Mining, as the mine advances toward full-scale production and the next phase of its development, the company notes.
Letaba brings with him almost 40 years of experience in the South African mining industry, having built a career that spans underground mining operations, mine planning, project development, business growth and executive leadership.
His mining journey began in 1988 as a learner official in the underground workings of Kimberley shortly after completing matric. Through hard work, determination, and a passion for mining, he steadily progressed through the ranks, serving in positions including Production Miner, Development Miner, Shift Boss, Mine Overseer, Mining Engineer, Superintendent, Operations Manager, Senior General Manager and CEO of Kudumane Manganese.
Letaba holds a B-Tech Degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Johannesburg and has earned a reputation as a respected industry leader known for his practical approach, operational expertise and commitment to developing people.
Prior to joining SMM, he held senior leadership positions within major South African mining companies, including Phalaborwa Mining Company, where he served as New Business Development Manager, and Foskor Mining, where he held the position of Senior Manager: Mining. These roles provided him with extensive experience in large-scale mining operations, project implementation, strategic planning and operational optimisation.
“As SMM continues to develop its rare earth mining and processing capabilities, Letaba’s wealth of experience will be invaluable in guiding the operation through its growth journey while maintaining the highest standards of safety, efficiency, environmental stewardship and stakeholder engagement,” SMM noted.
Speaking about his approach to leadership and life, Letaba said he often refers to a principle inspired by Newton’s First Law of Motion: An object in motion continues at the same speed unless it is acted upon by an unbalanced force. “For me this serves as a reminder that progress is achieved through continuous movement, adaptability and the courage to embrace new opportunities and challenges,” he said.
The Executive Chairman Dr. Enock Mathebula said the appointment comes at a time when SMM is following several significant milestones, including the successful commissioning of its on-site laboratory, the production of monazite concentrate for the first time in more than 60 years, and the commencement of construction on the mine’s new monazite processing plant.
