The Mining Commission of Tanzania has reiterated its dedication to enhancing local content compliance by ensuring that Tanzanian service providers and manufacturers meet the required technical and quality standards in the mining sector.
This move aims to broaden opportunities for local businesses and boost the mining sector’s contribution to Tanzania’s economic growth.
Speaking on Thursday in Mwanza during the Fifth Local Content Compliance Forum (LCCF 2026), Dr. Theresia Numbi, Chairperson of the Committee on Tanzanian Participation in the Mining Sector, emphasized the Commission’s ongoing efforts to improve local content policies. These efforts are designed to increase Tanzanian participation throughout the mining value chain.
Dr. Numbi highlighted that local participation should extend beyond mineral extraction to include the supply of goods, provision of services, manufacturing, and other supporting activities within the mining industry.
She further stressed that service providers and manufacturers must meet stringent technical qualifications and quality standards to successfully compete for business opportunities in the sector.
Drawing on Ghana’s experience, Dr. Numbi noted that the country has strengthened indigenous participation through a robust local content framework. This framework requires mining companies to submit local content implementation plans, pay prescribed fees, and remit part of their annual revenue to the government. Additionally, companies and service providers must undergo assessments of their technical capacity and compliance with relevant standards before receiving approval to operate in the mining sector.
Dr. Numbi encouraged Tanzanian businesses to seize the opportunities within the mining sector by continuously improving the quality of their products and services to remain competitive.
“It is essential for service providers to meet the required standards and deliver high-quality products and services, as quality is the foundation of competitiveness and long-term business sustainability in the mining sector,” she stated.
The Commission’s renewed focus on local content compliance is expected to promote sustainable growth, elevate local businesses, and enhance Tanzania’s economic development through a more inclusive mining industry.
