Tsavorite gemstone continues to make its mark on international markets

Tanzania’s Tsavorite gemstone has continued to make its mark on international markets, celebrated not only for its vivid green brilliance but also for its economic and strategic value.

The gemstone, which is found primarily in the Simanjiro Mountains, Lemshuku Village in northern Tanzania, carries millions of years of geological heritage and represents a significant opportunity for national development.

According to information from the ministry of minerals, geologically, Tsavorite forms under intense heat and pressure in gneiss and schist rocks where its striking green color, caused by vanadium and chromium, sets it apart from other green garnets such as demantoid and uvarovite.

“Its rarity and quality place Tanzania among the few countries worldwide endowed with this exceptional gemstone has given the nation a strategic edge in the global luxury gemstone market,” the ministry stated.

Additionally, the ministry stated that in high-end jewellery, Tsavorite is highly prized for its transparency, durability, and Mohs hardness of 7.0 – 7.5, making it ideal for rings, necklaces, and earrings.

Also, designers in Europe, Asia, and the United States value it for long-lasting use and striking beauty, cementing Tanzania’s reputation as a source of premium gemstones.

Elaborating, the ministry noted that the rare gemstone was discovered in Tanzania in 1967 by British geologist Campbell R. Bridges, who later gained international attention when rediscovered in Kenya’s Tsavo National Park.

“Since then, Tsavorite has grown beyond a luxury item to become a key contributor to Tanzania’s economy, generating foreign exchange, government revenue, and employment across the gemstone value chain,” the ministry said.

The Ministry of Minerals has implemented strategies to ensure domestic value addition, including training programs via the Tanzania Gemological Centre, establishing cutting and polishing industries, and enhancing infrastructure and market access.

Furthermore, the ministry revealed that small-scale miners, particularly youth and women, have benefited from the Mining for a Brighter Tomorrow (MBT) program, which provides licenses, technical training, and access to national and international digital auctions.

Tsavorite has also catalysed investment in modern mining, gemstone processing, trade, and tourism, creating a high-value chain that boosts employment and strengthens the Mining Sector’s contribution to Tanzania’s GDP. With continued investment, effective management, and value addition, Tanzania is set to solidify its position as a global hub for rare and high-quality gemstones.
