Kumba invests R26 million in road rehabilitation project

As part of its Social Labour Plan commitments, Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen Mine has undertaken a road resurfacing project, upgrading three major roads in Kathu – Gamagara Local Municipality, over a three-month period to enhance local road infrastructure.
The project, spanning from Ben Alberts, Frikkie Meyer and Karee Avenue, involved the of a traffic management plan, the inspection and repair of the sub-base, sealing road cracks, fixing potholes, applying of asphalt mix, and installation road markings, studs and speedhumps.
After a seven-month consultation period with municipal representatives, Concor was appointed as the contractor to execute the project, creating short-term employment opportunities for local residents. The road rehabilitation began in September and concluded in November 2023.
Well-maintained roads, beyond stimulating economic activity and enhancing pedestrian and motorist safety, play a crucial role in stormwater management, reducing soil erosion, and ensuring efficient and controlled movement.
George Benjamin, Corporate Affairs & Social Performance Manager, emphasises the projects significance. “The identified roads are vital traffic arteries in the area. The investment is part of our SLP commitments, ensures critical public infrastructure is well maintained, prioritizing road-user safety.
Engaging with Gamagara Local Municipality over a several months facilitated the necessary arrangements for the project’s success.
Aligned with our Sustainable Mine Plan’s Collaborative Regional Development section, this project aims to improve lives by fostering thriving communities through partnerships with the public sector and other stakeholders.
We are pleased with the quality of work implemented and its positive impact on the residents of the town.”
