Minister Nusrat Ghani will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural London Indaba “Investing in resources and mining in Africa”, which focuses on Africa’s critical role in the minerals and metals of the future and why the world needs more (not less) mining, takes place on June 26th – 27th 2023, at The InterContinental Park Lane London.

The event, borne out of the Joburg Indaba which is now in its 11th year in South Africa, has attracted a host of industry experts who will be speaking over the course of the two days and will be chaired by Joburg Indaba chair Bernard Swanepoel. Well known for his trademark bold, blunt and constructive approach to tackling important issues, Swanepoel will lead critical conversations reaching to the heart of relevant matters.
He says: “Mining in Africa presents both challenges and opportunities, but I firmly believe that the opportunities outweigh the challenges. As part of the industry it is our responsibility to engage in conversations around responsible and sustainable mining practices in Africa. By doing so, we can create long-term value for all stakeholders involved.
“Africa is home to many of the world’s essential minerals and metals including PGMs, gold, copper, cobalt, nickel, lithium, graphite, rare earths, vanadium, manganese, coal, to name but a few, and many African countries have these in abundance. African countries will continue to play a vitally important role in supplying the many important minerals and metals needed for our future society.”
Neal Froneman, Chief Executive Officer, Sibanye-Stillwater and long term supporter of the South African annual indabas, will also be in attendance: “As a mining CEO, I am acutely aware of the critical role that Africa plays in meeting global demand for minerals. With increasing urbanisation and the rise of green technologies, the demand for minerals is only going to grow. It’s essential that we continue to invest in Africa to ensure a reliable and sustainable supply of these minerals.”
Over two days, the 2023 London Indaba will discuss current and future supply and demand and interrogate the opportunities for Africa to provide a reliable, ethical and environmentally sustainable supply which will both meet global demand and satisfy what investors are looking for when investing in African resource and mining companies.
Event highlights include:
A fireside chat with Robert Friedland, Founder and Executive Co-Chairman at Ivanhoe Mines; a keynote address by Simon Thompson, Senior Adviser, Rothschild & Co London and former Chairman, Rio Tinto, on how investing in critical minerals and metals is “different”; a panel discussions on the future role of PGMs in a low-carbon economy and why manganese is so critical now and for the future; and a highly relevant discussion on how the world’s governments are incentivising future minerals and metals, which will include Peter Leon, Partner and Global Africa Chair, Herbert Smith Freehills, Prof Paul Ekins OBE, Professor of Resources and Environmental Policy, UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources, University of London, and Ludivine Wouters, Managing Partner, Latitude Five.
The event is supported by Anglo American; African Rainbow Minerals; Impala Platinum; Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited; Menar; amongst others who will be flying their flags as Mining Industry Partners at the inaugural London Indaba.
Swanepoel concludes: “Africa is important to the future of mining and mining is important to the future of Africa!”
